: or does that drop the engine down lower than it's peak efficiency rpm? : Mike in fifth gear, at 45-50 (2Krpm), most all cars tend to bog. this is because most engines make their peak torque at roughly 2,500RPM. (non turbo/no boost) An engine that runs at it's peak torque is running at it's maximum efficiency. Just because a car makes tons of HP, doesn't mean it's efficient. I was able to get my corvette to give a consistant 32-35 MPG on the freeway by running in 3rd gear (auto). A very significant major down fall is that it lowers engine life. Engine life is directly proportional to how MANY revolutions the internals have made. (this is why we use good synthetic oils, to combat this). so a car that travels at 3,000 RPM it's entire life will last fewer miles than a car that travels at 2,250 RPM it's entire life.
Married men live longer than single men, but married men are a lot more willing to die.
